Why do Catholics tend to me more liberal leaning than evangelicals.............?
According to polls that have been done by Gallup, Catholics are about 50-50 split when it comes to voting Democrat or Republican. This is in contrast to the fact that the vast majority of evangelicals vote Republican all the time. There are many prominent liberals such as Michael Moore and Nanci Pelosi that are also Catholic as well. I dont see the same when it comes to Evangelicals. Most of the Evangelicals i see are die hard conservatives. Also interesting is the Catholic view point on social issues. When it comes to issues like Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Contraception, Euthanasia and Pre-Marital sex, the Catholic Church takes a fairly non-compromising stand(like many evangelicals). But when it comes to issues such as labor rights, getting a proper education, access to health care and medical facilities and welfare, the Catholic Church's position is pretty left leaning. In fact, i read an article both on 'The Nation', and the 'National Catholic Reporter' in which Vatican officials are quote as saying they agree with the general premise of the movement, and many have even stated that the Church's official positions on these matter are actually to the left of even occupy wall street. This is in contrast to Evangelicals who tend to side with Big Business. When it comes to other social issues, such as the Creation-Evolution controversy, Evangelicals take the notion of kids seriously and personally, and many times have their children home schooled so they could be taught creationism. Many evangelicals seems to take a conservative position on Evolution, opposing it and challenging it being taught in the education system through legal fights(such as the Dover v Kitzmiller case). Catholics from what ive seen(which means its not set in stone) seem to be indifferent to the creation-evolution debate, and seem to think that evangelicals are wasting their time. When it came to the Iraq war, while many Catholics supported it, there where an awful lot of Catholics that opposed it. The Vatican itself opposed the Iraq war, with Pope John Paul ii saying "Wars generally do not resolve the problems for which they are fought and therefore... prove ultimately futile" Its seems to be an interesting dicotomy..........

Catholic moral and social teaching does not fit well into popular culture's labels of liberal, moderate, or conservative. The Catholic Church is pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life." This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of: • All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms. (liberal) • The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in vitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning (conservative) • The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanasia (conservative) • Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty (liberal) • The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues (liberal) With love in Christ.

Catholics have a long history of social and economic concerns. The modern use of the term "evangelical" among Protestants, by contrast, has been reduced to two allowed meanings: anti-liberal, and anti-evolution. The anti-liberal bias is a consequence of the Reagan synthesis which rebuilt the Republican Party on the merger of the religious right with the wealthy elite, dragging economic conservatives along by labeling the whole thing "conservative." (And indeed, it has become a re-creation of something the U.S. lacked since the Revolution: a Tory Party.) The anti-evolution leaning was simply a price of that merger. Both Republicanism and Evangelicalism jettisoned their historical roots in the process.
